Dr. Wheeler, who is both licensed and certified as a school psychologist in Florida, has worked as a bilingual school psychologist in the Manatee County School District. His responsibilities included assessment, counseling and consultation with students Pre-K through Grade 12, including bilingual evaluation/consultation. In addition, his responsibilities included staff development and training relating to bilingual assessment and minority issues. Dr. Wheeler was actively involved in development and training relating to the automated IEP system, implementation of the Response to Intervention model in pilot schools and served as an intern supervisor. Prior to his work with the Manatee schools, Dr. Wheeler worked as a school psychologist for 12 years in the Pinellas County School District where he served as a team leader for school psychologists and as a secondary-level school psychologist on the District Manifestation Determination Team.
Dr. Wheeler received his Ph.D. in school psychology from the University of Texas at Austin and completed his internship in the Dallas Independent School District. Prior to receiving his Ph.D., Dr. Wheeler served as a research assistant at the Handicapped Minority Research Institute in Texas, as an ESOL Instructor at the Instituto Cultural Dominico-Americano in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and as a university instructor at the Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra in Santiago, Dominican Republic.
Dr. Wheeler joins the Student Support Services Team in Tallahassee. The team consists of consultants representing the areas of social work (Gria Davison), nursing (Dianne Mennitt), and counseling (Rich Downs and Helen Lancashire). The Student Support Services Project provides technical assistance and policy analysis/development services to the Florida Department of Education, provides technical assistance and support to the 67 school districts in Florida and serves in a liaison/communication role to the student services state associations and university training programs. In addition, the Student Support Services Project serves as an incubator for the development of innovative practices.
